Future Dreaming

Video by Wiener Städtische Versicherungsverei

Future Dreaming is a site-specific project specially developed for the well-known Ringturm building where Wiener Städtische Versicherungsverein has a long-standing commitment to the arts, culture and society. What has now been a summer tradition since 2006, the Ringturm has been transformed into the most spectacular works of urban art. The Ringturm project is a high-profile symbol of the cross-border cultural exchange and dialogue in public spaces that Wiener Städtische Versicherungsverein is driving forward. This unique use of a central urban building sets a stellar example of corporate support for the arts and reflects a trend that will hopefully take off in other cities around the world.

Future Dreaming encompasses all four sides of the Ringturm, compelling visitors to make the journey around the building to absorb the work from all perspectives. The central image, essentially a baby astronaut with a white dove perched playfully on the helmet, welcomes the viewer to join in play and at the very least one has to smile upon seeing it. The narrative expands onto the side of the building with an image of a mobile toy-model of the universe. Here the artist introduces the concept of balance as the toy wouldn’t work if  all elements (celestial bodies, human, rocket) are not in balance.

Kostova, whose artwork often looks to the act of play–its meaning, its safety and its future—is the 12th artist to wrap the Ringturm. She is preceded most recently by Gottfried Helnwein. Future Dreaming was on view through the summer of 2019.
